We have a male identity crisis in America.
Men don’t know how to be men. Ask any male what it means to “be a man,” and you’ll get a wide variety of answers – with very few of them aligned with the Bible. That’s because most men are learning standards of male behavior from video games, TV sitcoms, the movies, and social media. The media’s portrayal of men, especially “dads,” is terrible. Male characters are depicted as cartoonish losers who lack a backbone, have no drive, no intellect, no value and no life skills.
The normalization of joining worldly culture instead of staying separate from it (as Christians are called) takes place because men are not growing up in households where God reigns supreme; and when men follow world culture instead of biblical standards, we get:
- Men who are not home as much as they should be, or who are not present at all, leaving a vacuum where we should see sacrificial love
- Men who are taking care of the family financially but not leading their family as the spiritual father of the home
- Men who are not protecting their families from worldly culture but exposing and even encouraging participation in it
- Men who are not leading lives of faith, but who claim the title “Christian” without the character of Christ
Without God as the family benchmark, men do not receive discipleship. They don’t know, and cannot live out the biblical concepts of fatherhood, spiritual headship, holiness, and sacrificial love.
It’s time for men to reclaim their manhood, maleness and leadership role that God has ordained for them.
